What is a VASECTOMY?

A vasectomy is a minor operation that makes a man permanently sterile (unable to make a woman pregnant) by blocking the flow of sperm.

A vasectomy won't change your sexual ability or pleasure. Some men report a better sex life because they don't have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy.

Reasons to Have a Vasectomy

  • You want to enjoy having sex without causing pregnancy.
  • You don't want to have a child in the future.
  • Your partner agrees that your family is complete, and no more children are wanted.
  • You and your partner have concerns about the side effects of other methods.
  • Other methods are unacceptable.
  • Your partner's health would be threatened by a future pregnancy.
  • You don't want to pass on a hereditary illness or disability.
  • You want to spare your partner the surgery and expense of tubal sterilization (sterilization for women is more complicated and costly).

How is a vasectomy done?

A vasectomy can be performed in my office. Before the surgery, I will use a local painkiller to make your scrotum numb. After that, I will make a small opening in the front of the scrotum. Through this very small opening, I will lift out each tiny tube (called "vas deferens") and cut them. The flow of sperm is stopped by sealing the loose ends of these tubes. This procedure usually only takes about 30 minutes and causes little pain.

Vasectomies done in our office

If you choose to discuss the vasectomy procedure with me, I will clearly explain the pros and cons, explain how the procedure is done, and give you thorough instructions for before and after your vasectomy. If you desire to have the vasectomy done, we will schedule an appointment for a week or two later to actually do the vasectomy. You will need to have someone drive you to the office on that day, and drive you home afterward. I will also have you return to my office twice in the weeks after the procedure to test your semen sample, to be sure there are no sperm present.

The cost of a vasectomy is $550, which includes the surgery, recheck, and follow-up semen samples. We can bill your insurance if you are covered for this type of surgery.

DO NOT CONSIDER VASECTOMY IF:

  • You want to have a child in the future.
  • You are being pressured by your partner, friends, or family * you must want the operation.
  • You have marriage or sexual problems, short-term mental or physical illnesses, financial worries, or you are out of work. Vasectomy is not a good solution for temporary problems.
  • You have not considered possible changes in your life, such as divorce, remarriage, or death of children.
  • You have not discussed it fully with your partner.
  • You plan to bank sperm in case you change your mind (Note: sperm banks collect, freeze, and thaw sperm for alternative insemination. However, some men's sperm does not survive freezing. And after six months, frozen sperm may begin to lose the ability to fertilize an egg.).
